Bunkering

Falmouth Harbour has a world renowned reputation as a refuelling stop for ships. Serving as the UK’s western most outpost for deep water bunkering, at the head of the English Channel.

Deep Water Bunkering

With a long history of bunker supply services, Falmouth Harbour offers options for year round deep water bunkering in a range of conditions.

The unique geography of Falmouth Bay provides sheltered anchorages in the prevailing westerly and south westerly winds, for vessels of all sizes. It is perfectly suited to the winter conditions characteristic of this area.

The deep waters of the Carrick Roads offer anchorages for vessels up to 180m LOA, providing extreme shelter and enabling bunkering when more exposed ports cannot.

The Eastern Jetty and fuel terminal support the UK’s most western outpost for deep water bunkering.

Falmouth remains one of the English Channels premier bunkering locations with a number of operators approved to deliver fuel within the Harbour Area.

Minimal Delays

With relatively low volumes of commercial traffic, vessels rarely experience delays when ordering a pilot.

This enables quick and efficient turnarounds.

Bunker calls can coincide with other services such as crew transfer, stores and provisions completed by one of Falmouth’s experienced local operators.

Safe Operations

Falmouth Harbour has been supporting safe bunkering within the Harbour Area for decades and has a number of effective mitigations in place:

  • New bunker barge authorisation and re authorisation process.
  • Detailed oil spill response planning.
  • An ongoing contract with a tier 2 contractor.
  • Oil spill response training for Harbour staff and operational teams.
  • Regular exercises.
  • Oil spill response equipment held on site in Falmouth.
  • P&I club checks.

Refuelling is a key part of everyday shipping operations and each vessel will have it’s own safe working practices and procedures which should come under regular scrutiny from inspectors.

Falmouth Harbour advocates bunkering within it’s sheltered anchorages as a safety and environmental action.
